When the school principal and I ask teacher candidates the reason for homework in an interview, they always say that the purpose of homework is to practice the skills learned in the classroom that day. And they are right, but now I think that I can ask them to elaborate a little more and talk more about not asking students to practice so much until they have had more "guided practice" and understand the concept better.

\nThe part on page 63 that says "for about every 30 minutes of "additional" homework a student does per night, his or her overall grade point average increases about half a point goes back to our discussion from this morning about effort.

\nAnother interesting point that Marzano makes is the idea that feedback with written comments has an effect size of .83 representing a percentile gain of 30. That's huge! It should not contain content or knowledge that is new to the student. However, I don't know that I agree that parental involvement should always be kept to a minimum. I think parents should be aware of homework and what skills their child is being taught. Also, I think if a student is struggling in certain areas, it should be perfectly acceptable for a parent to take an active role and assist their child with reteaching or repetition without giving answers and\/or doing the student's homework for him\/her. It seems to be a confusing message - sometimes we want parents more involved in their child's education and other times we don't? I think it is a great idea to explain parental expectations and homework at the beginning of the school year; however, they should still be available to assist and guide their children if needed.","dateCreated":"1277337992","smartDate":"Jun 23, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"JenKro","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/JenKro","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"25373349","body":"I definitely agree that we tend to send mixed messages to parents about helping their children with the homework. I know that I helped my children with homework...my daughter more than my son...and I often think that if I wouldn't have....who would have? Yes, it made for some unpleasant experiences at times and not every parent makes it a priority, but I don't think it's the school's place to tell a parent not to help their child either.","dateCreated":"1277341013","smartDate":"Jun 23, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"smattocks","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/smattocks","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"25373475","body":"What makes homework effective? I guess that goes back to what is the purpose of homework. If the purpose of homework is to practice, then the student should have mastered the skill by then. If the student can demonstrate that he or she has mastered that skill, there is no need to do so many exercises. The homework would be effective if the student has done the skill correctly and in the case of the spiraling packets that were discussed in class (which I believe is a great idea), the homework provides opportunity for the student to maintain understanding of a particular skill.","dateCreated":"1277341330","smartDate":"Jun 23, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"smattocks","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/smattocks","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"25373867","body":"I think it's important that students are ultimately responsible for their homework and understanding the content assigned. Parents can get "too involved" at times and it sends the wrong message to students. On the other hand, I feel sometimes that homework kind of forces the issue for parents to become more involved and aware of what's happening in schools. How often do we complain that parents have no idea what's in the backpack, and don't sign homework books, or that an older brother\/sister is doing the work of a parent?
