The chapter reminds us that we are taught that objectives contain three components:
\n
\n*performance: an objective always says what a learner is expected to be able to do; the objective sometimes describes the product or result of the doing
\n*conditions: an objective always describes the important conditions under which the performance is to occur
\n*criterion: whenever possible , an objective describes the criterion of acceptable performance by describing how well the learner must perform in order to be considered acceptable.
\n
\nMarzano's work suggests that these may result in objectives that are too specific. A method I use to write objectives is to begin with the following frame: Given (conditions), students will (learning goal\/performance) by (criterion). I'm now wondering if this frame is as effective as I once thought.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"25353175","body":"I think this frame is definitely effective, especially when objectives need to be measurable so that data is easily collected. I particularly liked the section on goal setting. I found out how important goal setting can be for use with students and help to make their learning more relevant to their own lives. We need to make time for it in the classroom. I will share this with faculty.
\n
\nI also think that goal setting can be used with teachers. It could be part of their differentiated professional development plan. What is it that you, as a teacher, would like to learn more about this particular school year to improve your craft? Everyone should have goals.
\n
\nThe discussion about students (how to motivate them, high expectations for them, accept them for who they are, deal with them as a person not their home life, help them grow no matter what) was powerful. I would really like to use some of those stories for discussion with my faculty. Unless we talk about it, we simply don't think about it. I think that sometimes we get so caught up in the negative about kids that we don't consider what positive things they are doing in spite of their individual circumstances.
\n
\nThe section on feedback made me think about how our paraprofessionals are working with students. Sometimes, I think that we think we are doing things right and research tells us differently. And that's ok!
\n
\nI continue to think about how I can incorporate some of these ideas into the book study sessions that I will be holding with the faculty this school year. The books are on inclusive practices. I will be using some cooperative groupings and goal setting will definitely be one idea that will be included.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"25345269","body":"I love your idea of having goals be part of the differentiated professional development plan!!! Thank you, Becci, for making the suggestion of incorporating this strategy into my collaborative project with Stephanie; I don't think I would have thought of it! Regarding rubrics, we all seem to pick up on the subjective nature of them. Yet, we all agree on their usefulness in communicating explicit expectations and providing useful feedback to students. Over the last few years, I have seen a shift from students with mild learning disabilities to more students who are much lower-functioning, with labels such as mentally-retarded or autistic. Many are also more behaviorally-challenged. I think because of this, I did not put as many expectations on them, but today have realized the importance of helping them gain control of their learning in some way. Next school year, I am going to go back to making ALL students aware of their goals and work to find ways to reinforce and track their efforts. For example, they may not be able to read sight words or read fluently, but I can still work together with the students to track their letter and number identification, letter sounds, and\/or behavioral progress.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"25345337","body":"What a great idea! I really liked the idea of having students set their own goals for their learning besides my objectives. With this great idea, I am wondering how the student learning would be managed for a whole classroom. Any ideas????
\n
\nFeedback: I do provide feedback quickly...usually the day after the test or at the very latest the second day. Where I fall short is with writing. It is not my favorite subject to teach. The students write almost everyday, but I when it comes to their final writing piece, I have a hard time making time for conferencing. It is an extremely critical piece that I need to be more disciplined to do.
\n
\nRubrics: I generally use rubrics for projects and writing. We go over the rubrics before hand, students self assess and then I grade. I liked the idea of conferencing to discuss the differences between the student's score and my score. Once again, time will be a huge factor.
\n
\nEffort: I really never thought of teaching the idea of effort=achievement. I guess it is something that I took for granted that they already knew. I liked the one example in the book that had the students watch the Olympics every night for a week and listen to the athletes stories. I would like to adapt this in some way to incorporate effort=achievement into my first week of school.
\n
\nLearning Contracts: I do not use learning contracts in my room. I like the idea of setting up the contract and allowing students to control their own achievement.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"25345385","body":"Your thoughts regarding feedback and frustrations with writing sound similar to some teachers with whom I have worked lately.
