\n
\nMarzano et al in this chapter talk about how important it is to recognize effort. Should then effort be a part of a student's grade? Answering that question also begs the question of purpose: What is the purpose of a grade? What ethical considerations are there for either including or excluding effort in a grade?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"25334561","body":"As a student who always put in a lot of effort but didn't always have the "brain power" to match, I feel effort should be recognized in some way. It can be very frustrating to work so hard and not get the "A's" you think you deserve. I think grades often show how many facts students know as opposed to the amount of knowledge they have gained about a topic. I also realize that it is extremely difficult for teachers to motivate the unmotivated student, and looking at the difference between reward and recognition is a good way to help students make the connection between effort and success and help teachers feel they are stimulating motivation.","dateCreated":"1277175292","smartDate":"Jun 21, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"cxw200","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cxw200","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"25352883","body":"I think in my students' cases, effort should definitely be recognized as a separate grade. Some of my students work so hard to make progress, only to still be a grade level or so behind. It's so frustrating for me to see how hard they've worked for their gains; however, when local assessments that use only grade level standards and reading text are given, their progress isn't always evident to others. Effort should definitely be recognized as a separate piece; however, assessing it should be data-driven in some way.","dateCreated":"1277252064","smartDate":"Jun 22, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"JenKro","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/JenKro","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"25355535","body":"In my content area (PE) effort is most definitely something we look at and utilize to grade our students. I think effort can alo be a grading component in other classes however as I sit here and reflect on it further I see that effort is something that can be subjective as well...one student's 100% effort may look very different from another student's 100% effort. For example we may see students who show a great deal of initiative and participation in class and other students who are simply more reserved...Do we interpret their efforts as unequal? Or you may have the kid who works hard outside of school and we don't necessarily observe them doing that...How do we grade that? I think another thing we need to be careful about is that we don't automatically correlate performance with effort...for example we have kids who attain the high grades but they don't really have to work that hard to do it...I'm thinking maybe a better indicator of effort would be measuring individual improvement.","dateCreated":"1277260649","smartDate":"Jun 22, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"jem315","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jem315","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"25394149","body":"A grade for effort is very appropriate, and gives validation to students who try so hard but do not meet the criteria for an 'A' (or B or C).
