I usually have the students begin each lesson on the carpet, we could go around the room and each student could finish the sentence, or I would have them draw something and then explain to the group. Last year in Kind., he chose to work on adding periods to the end of his sentences. At the end of the school year, he attended the last conference, showed us his portfolio, and was encouraged to share if he thought he had achieved his goal. It was neat because he had work samples to show from the very beginning of the year and the end. Even with one or two simple goals, such as adding periods, students are able to work on them throughout the year.
